Maybe the question should be, "why did I spend the last several years developing an electronic wind instrument?" I went to grammar and junior high school in the 1960's.  At that time, music education was required.  I learned to play and read music using a cheap plastic flute that sounded horrible and was never in tune.  But it did the job.  After about six months of instruction, we had the option to continue our music education and get a real instrument.  I chose the oboe.  Why?
